Dual Diagnosis
Our South Miami rehab center provides clinically sophisticated treatment for addiction and co-occurring mental illnesses.
Many people struggling with addiction also suffer from a co-occurring mental health condition. This is known as a dual diagnosis. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 45% of people with an addiction also have a co-occurring mental health disorder. People dealing with multiple disorders require a specialized approach to treatment which addresses both concerns at once. At South Miami Recovery, we offer integrated dual diagnosis treatment.
Common Co-Occurring Conditions
Certain disorders are commonly associated with addiction. These may serve as a catalyst for problematic substance use – it is not uncommon for people to attempt to self-medicate the symptoms of a mental health condition. This is why it is so vital to treat both of these concerns simultaneously in cases of dual diagnosis. The patient’s symptoms should be considered when creating their long-term recovery plan.
A substance use disorder can happen alongside any number of mental health concerns, from mood disorders to personality disorders. A history of trauma may also predispose a person to abuse drugs and alcohol.
Dual diagnosis can take many forms. Common mental illnesses linked to addiction include:
- Depression - a mood disorder characterized by low mood and loss of interest in activities.
- Anxiety - a diagnosis characterized by strong feelings of worry and fear that interfere with daily life.
- Bipolar disorder - a disorder consisting of long-term mood swings ranging from depressive lows to manic highs.
- ADHD and ADD - chronic conditions characterized by hyperactivity, attention difficulties, and impulsiveness.
- Eating disorders - disturbances in eating behaviors (anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, orthorexia).
- OCD - obsessions (excessive thoughts) that lead to compulsions (compulsions).
- PTSD - difficulty recovering after a traumatic life experience.
Comprehensive Mental Health Treatment
People diagnosed with a mental illness are almost twice as likely to suffer from a substance use disorder as the general population. Several theories exist as to why dual diagnosis is such a common occurrence. Some researchers believe that substance use can cause brain changes which mimic a mental illness. Others point to genetic predispositions, which can increase one’s chance of either of these conditions. Additionally, environmental factors such as stress, poor living conditions, and traumatic events can catalyze an addiction or mental illness.
